The state government came out with an explanation over the notice issued by Mayyil Police Station to Juma Masjid in Kannur in the context of protests over the remarks against the Prophet. The explanatory note released by CM's office described the notice presented by the SHO of Mayyil Police Station, Biju Prakash, as untimely and against the viewpoints of both the government and LDF. "It was a wrong notice issued by the SHO without understanding the government policy. He has been removed from his post. It is a phase in which certain forces are trying to create communal conflicts across the nation. Hence, it is crucial that we protect the unity and peace that exists between believers, religious institutions and citizens," it read. "The government doesn't have the opinion that Juma Masjids are fuelling communal polarisation. That is why the authorities took action against the officer as soon as it came to their notice," the note further stated. The note also requests that everyone understand the importance and necessity of communal harmony and cooperate with the government. Huge protests took place in Kannur over the derogatory remarks against the Prophet made by now-suspended BJP leader Nupur Sharma. The district also saw protests by the Imams council. The notice was issued by the SHO stating that religious lectures shouldn't pave the way for communal hatred. The commissioner had ordered a verbal instruction, but Biju Prakash issued a notice instead. He later explained that it was a mistake.
