Van Gujjar Muslims AllegedlyAssaulted by Officials

People from Van Gujjar community of Rajaji National Park claim that a woman was assaulted when villagers tried to resist forest officers' attempt to demolish their camps which were protected under the Scheduled Tribes and Other Traditional Forest Dwellers (Recognition of Forest Rights) Act. Villagers allege that on the following day officials returned with 30 others carrying sticks, batons and guns and assaulted more women. Villagers claim that they faced difficulty in lodging FIRs, following which police lodged FIRs against villagers themselves. As many as 7 individuals were arrested. Relatives allege that villagers were tortured while they were detained. On July 4th, four arrested women were released while 3 men continued to await bail.
