Fathima Latheef, a 19 year old IIT- Madras Student has committed suicide alleging her professors for religious discrimination in her suicide note. The girl, hailing from Kollam district of Kerala, hanged herself on 9th of November in her hostel. In the suicide note, saved in her phone, she has noted 'Sudarshan Padmanabhan is the cause of my death'. Mr. Padmanabhan is a professor in the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences, the same faculty the girl belongs to. In the further note, she has accused two other professors also. Her parents have reported that, she has mentioned many times about discrimination on the basis of her religion. "My daughter faced caste based and religious discrimination from her faculties. Earlier she said that her name (Muslim name) itself is a problem there” Her father reported to media. Fathima was a bright student who secured admission being first in the entrance test conducted by the center last year. However, the police were initially inactive regarding filing of the complaint or checking on to the suicide note. Five suicides have been reported in IIT-M, in the past year alone. The case of Fathima Latheef adds to the line of institutional murders based on religion or caste based identity like that of Rohit Vemula and Payal Tadwi happening in India's premier educational institutions.
