Dr. Aarti Lalchandani is the principal of Kanpur's Ganesh Shankar Vidhyarthi Medical College. In April, her hospital administration had gone on record to allege misbehaviour by members of Tablighi Jamaat, who attended a gathering in March in violation of virus precautions and were linked to a spurt in COVID-19 cases across India. The hospital had alleged that members of the sect were quarantined at the hospital were prone to spitting randomly and also "breaking all norms of social distancing". In a video clip, Dr Lalchandani can also be seen and heard saying that instead of keeping such patients (Tablighi members) in isolation wards and exhausting resources on them, they should be put in solitary confinement in jails or sent to the jungles and locked up in dungeons. She argued that Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath should issue an order that no state manpower or resources should be used on the treatment of Jamaat members. "Those who should be in jail, you are bringing them here for treatment, feeding them, getting others infected, wasting manpower and kits," she is heard saying. "They should be kept in solitary confinement in jail. You are keeping them in isolation ward," Dr Lalchandani allegedly remarks in the clip.
